What is National Children’s Dental Health Month?

The American Dental Association (ADA) first celebrated Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8th, 1949. Now, 73 years later we still celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) each year in February. While the world may have changed beyond recognition since that historic day, the value of oral health remains just as important nowadays.

Children’s oral health needs to be taken seriously because they have the highest rate of tooth decay. When children grow up knowing the seriousness of dental disease, they will realize the importance of oral health prevention.

Here are some significant ways to honor children’s dental health month at your house this February.

How to Make National Children’s Dental Health Month a Success

Parents should teach their children how to take good care of their own teeth during National Children’s Dental Health Month.

1. Start at an Early Age

Children should be taught oral hygiene from an early age since cavities and tooth decay are quite common among kids. Parents should talk to their children about dental health and teach them proven ways to prevent cavities.

2. Brush and Floss Every Day

Children need dental health to thrive. Your child should brush their teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and know how to brush their teeth properly so that they don’t harm their gums. These three simple rules will prevent dental problems.

3. Get Annual Cleanings and Checkups

By going to the dentist regularly before your children are old enough to visit one, you will set an example for them to follow. You can use these opportunities to explain to your children that since dentists are experts in dental care, they recommend that you visit them at least twice a year for checkups and cleaning. These visits will ensure your teeth are healthy and will prevent future problems.

Once your children are old enough, make sure that they get regular dental checkups, too, because it will improve their dental health as they grow. Tell them how dental checkups prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities.

If you have a busy schedule and can’t take them yourself, ask an uncle, aunt, or grandparent to take them to the dentist.

Teach your children Good Dental Care Habits

Young children should be taught the importance of dental hygiene. It is more likely that they will take care of their teeth throughout their life if they learn about the importance of dental care at an early age. Besides teaching them the basics of proper brushing and daily flossing, make sure that they get annual dental check-ups, too.
